Alternative rock supergroup Crystal Fairy was formed in 2016 by Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover of the Melvins, Omar Rodríguez-López of At the Drive-In and the Mars Volta, and Teri Gender Bender of Le Butcherettes. The seeds of the band were sown when Le Butcherettes supported the Melvins on their 2016 summer tour and Gender Bender got up on-stage every night to do an encore of Bikini Kill's "Rebel Girl" with the headliners, which became the highlight of the evening. Rodríguez-López, who had produced and played guitar for Le Butcherettes, hooked up with the others on the tour and floated the idea that they should all form a band together. The rest, as they say, is history. With Osborne on guitar, Crover on drums, Rodríguez-López on bass, and Gender Bender on vocals, the quartet -- possibly named after the 2013 Chilean comedy-adventure film starring Michael Cera -- booked studio time in El Paso and L.A. to begin writing and recording their debut album.

Texas guitarist Gary Clark, Jr. has been compared to guitar icons like Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and his playing is a powerful and inspired mix of blues, contemporary soul, and hip-hop, and when he's rolling at his best, he sounds like nothing so much as a natural hybrid of both the past and the future of the blues
Gary Clark, Jr.
Grinder 5:02
Our Love 7:50
My Baby's Gone (Elmore James) 4:05
from Live North America 2016 2017
... The album succeeds because Gary Clark, Jr. knows that blues needs songs, feel, and groove in addition to solos. Indeed, the striking thing about the album is its vibe: he may be playing to large audiences, but the record feels warm and intimate, sliding into soul grooves as often as it gets gritty. In many ways, it feels richer than his studio albums, which rely on pushing his contemporary flair to the forefront. Live North America 2016 is all about the basics and that's why it works as well as it does.

Swedish four-piece Dolores Haze have garnered an underground following in their native Stockholm for their dystopian teen noise pop and loud electronics. They teamed up with Swedish Indie-label Woah Dad! earlier this year to release “I Got My Gun” – a twisted minute of riot grrrl guitars and saturated 80s textures.

Leader of Roxy Music whose solo career includes eclectic covers wandering everywhere from early rock and soul hits up to Dylan and Beatles tunes. / While his tenure as the frontman for the legendary Roxy Music remained his towering achievement, singer Bryan Ferry also carved out a successful solo career that continued in the lush, sophisticated manner perfected on the group's final records.
Bryan Ferry
Loop de Li 4:16
Avonmore 5:13
from Avonmore 2014
On the album art of Avonmore, the record he released when he was a year shy of 70, Bryan Ferry showcases himself as a dashing young man -- a portrait of an artist not as a glam trailblazer or distinguished elder statesman, but rather caught in an indeterminate time between the gorgeous heartbreak of Roxy Music's Avalon and the meticulous solo work that came immediately in its wake...

Angular, witty, and idiosyncratic math rock trio fronted by Steve Albini.
Shellac
Dude Incredible 6:00
You Came in Me 2:06
Surveyor 3:12
from Dude Incredible 2014
...The members of Shellac have tremendous intuition in terms of how the pieces of their songs fit together, and simply hearing this band play this stuff, gracefully exploding like a string of firecrackers, is a very genuine pleasure. Ultimately, Dude Incredible is a good but not great album from an undeniably great band; it doesn't sound lazy, just short one or two top-rank songs that would bump its status up a notch, but it's clearly the work of as strong and interesting a band as you can hear these days.

Stirring soul singer who began recording in the 1960s, finally reached a deserved mass audience in the '00s.
